[News Flash] laNeva Product Updates

We've been working up a storm lately! Testing new products, developing new Rift color combinations, collaborating with several artists and working to set up new dealers.  Whew! So, without further ado, we announce:

laNeva is now offering 6"x6" tile in Solid and Rift Colors!

Showcasing our newest display board with this new 6x6 size tile is Filmore Clark in West Hollywood, CA.  These new, larger handmade tiles are a  perfect compliment to our 3x6 subway tile (or for anyone sick of small-scale tile) these beauties are a fabulous way to make a statement - BIG!!

laNeva's newest "IT"colors!

You've probably seen the post already, but wanted to remind you.

laNeva asked for your help to select  3 out of a possible 6 glaze color options for our limited edition "IT" colors.  We had a fun poll with a ton of "voter turnout" and announced our three limited edition colors colors  a few weeks ago.

#11 Laguna, #19 Smoke and #10 Tangerine are already getting rave reviews and we are having so much fun pairing them with our existing solid colors for some fab new handmade Rift color combos!  Stay tuned for more!

laNeva's Super Secret Collaboration:

Yes, we've got something up our sleeve that will have it's big reveal in the coming months.

Can't say much now, except it is really different and we're very excited to be paired with such a talented artist. This is not just a one-time deal, but an new laNeva collection to be available through laNeva Tile dealers, Spacial Adaptation Product Agency and our website.

(I feel super sneaky with a tease like that as I am one of those people who cannot wait for surprises, but there is much more information to follow in the coming weeks.  Trust me, it's worth the wait!)

Until then: Support local shops and artisans. Add color to your life. Celebrate Spring.  Happy Wednesday!!

Minnesota Green Spotlight

I really need to send a big shout out to two MN companies that I admire and want to tell the world about: Metamorphosis and their Tuesday Green feature of Amazon Environmentals recycled paints.

Metamorphosis is a multi-faceted company that focuses on Realty as well as Design/Build, leasing and Property Management. They are environmentally conscious, locally connected and have an entertaining and informative blog (which is the goal of all of us, right?)

The latest blog post from Metamorphosis is featuring Amazon Environmentals, Inc and their incredible recycled paints. Amazon uses discarded paints that are brought to local Household hazardous waste centers for disposal. This is an exciting product that produces 12 colors made from recycled latex paints.  I am giddy. What a cool concept.

Check out these two very forward thinking MN companies.  I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more from both in the future.

Announcing the 2011 "IT" Colors!

Thanks to all of you who voted in the poll to choose our three limited edition glaze colors for 2011. We had a great response and after some changes in rank through the first day, the winners were soon evident and stayed on top through the remainder of the voting. Announcing the winning colors (Drumroll is so passé. How about a rockin' foot stomp?)....

#1: With 33% of the vote and already a pre-order: Laguna!

#2: Anything but boring, gray is hot, especially with these brights: Smoke!

#3: Rounding out the top three: "She uses Tangerine(s)!!"*

These colors will be available for samples and orders on Monday, May 2nd.  We're also planning fabulous Rift Series color combos with these new glazes used in conjunction with our existing Solid Colors.  Thanks again everyone and we look forward to another exciting product launch coming in the very near future!

How will handmade tile accent your life?

* Pop culture reference from The Flaming Lips circa 1993. Does that make us old???

Choose Our Limited Edition Colors!

We need your help to vote for our new, Limited Edition "IT" Colors for 2011! Out of 5 options, please select 3 that will accent our existing solid color glazes for one calendar year. Voting will be open for one week and you'll be able to vote just once. We'll release the winners at 5 PM CST on Monday, April 18th and the winning colors will be officially added to our 2011 color offering on May 2nd, 2011.

All winning colors will be available as solid or Rift tiles and can be used by themselves or as a part of our Lineal or Slice Collection mesh-mounted borders or SPAN field tile patterns.

What are you waiting for? Vote for 3!

The Non-Toxic Dilemma...

A choice we made upon starting laNeva Tile: All of our glazes must be lead-free and rated as AP-non-toxic. All of them. No exceptions. Okay, here's the dilemma: While the industry is reformulating many glazes to be lead-free, there are still a lot of glazes out there with lead and cadmium in them or they are still considered a "toxic" glaze (or rather, not "non-toxic) because they contain other elements with a known health risk.

There is yet another problem when the glazes meet the non-toxic requirements when used as a brushed-on glaze, but not when sprayed.  Inhalation risks are great with sprayed glazes and any dry glazes. Lead-free or not. (Spraying is not an issue for us because we brush all of our glazes. Glaze overspray isn't good for people or the environment, period.)

An even further problem is that some of the coolest, richest, most dramatic glaze colors are made from heavy metals, including lead and cadmium, the exact elements that make these tiles not fit with our business model.

We have an awesome (and I don't use that word lightly) launch coming up and we're working on glaze formulations and selections like madwomen* here. The challenge is to find glaze formulas that create gorgeous laNeva-worthy colors that all fit in with our lead free and non-toxic glaze model. So, stick around for a truly fabulous, richest, bestest new glaze color launch you ever did see - all lead free and non-toxic - early next week.

*Yes, for those of you wondering, we are all women at laNeva Tile ;)

[Color Feature] Tiger-Eye

Amber, Tiger-eye, Butterscotch: whatever you call it, it's a  popular, timeless color that conveys a sense of richness and exoticism. laNeva's #75 Curry is a gorgeous example of this hue.

Our favorite inspiration site, Houzz has done it again with a collection of photos featuring this luscious, butterscotch palette. Follow the arrows on the bottom of the photos to scroll through the gorgeous photo ideabook.

How Much Tile? Design Tips & Averages

You're looking at tile and want a quick reference for how many square feet you might need.  What to do? Consider these common measurements and tile design tips:

Kitchen Backsplash: Usually around 18" high but lengths vary greatly. An average kitchen splash length is 10-20 lineal feet = 15-30 square feet of space to be tiled.

Tub Surround: For a standard tub, the wall lengths are usually 36", 60", 36" = 11 lineal feet x 6' or 7' wall height (approx) = 66-77 square feet of tile needed.

Wainscot: Tile wainscoting is a great look, but what height should it be?  For the best possible result, never cut the wall in half.  This is one of the most important wainscot tips. If the wall is 8' high, you want the total wainscot height below or above 48". Consider 36", 42"or 54" from the floor to the top of the wainscoting.

Border: If you're looking for a horizontal border or decorative stripe, take the lineal measurements given above. What about the height to place it at? That's personal preference. At the top of wainscoting is good (not to exceed the total height listed above) or in a shower, 5' is a great height. It doesn't interfere with the plumbing locations yet is near eye level.  For a unique  and more contemporary look, place the border vertically and run the border from floor (or tub) to ceiling.

Fireplace: Designs vary, but you should consider whether you are tiling just the face of the fireplace, between a wood mantle and the firebox, or all the way around a fireplace, including the hearth and sides. Check out this fireplace for example: a total of 14 square feet (in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x4) of laNeva tile #90 Oregano.

Still can't decide what would look best?  Call or email questions@lanevatile.com and we'd be thrilled to provide a phone consultation and custom layout options for you, including lots of tips on how to make your tile project a complete showstopper! We've been designing dynamic tile environments for... well, forever! (Okay, it's  been about 13 years.)

SPAN Field Tile Patterns- Squares

Last week we announced our newest collection of field tile patterns called SPAN (to go along with our Lineal & Slice Collections of Borders) and showed you SPAN patterns using laNeva's rectangular tiles.  Some fun layouts were included with our favorite being the 3 pattern options using our 1x6 liner. Fab-u-lous!

As promised, we are following up with the squares. It's hip to be square (had to throw that in there!) and we see a huge resurgence in the market for square tiles. So without further delay, we bring to you:

SPAN Collection - Squares

All pattern drawings show one square foot of each layout. For those of you super-savy readers (of which you ALL are!) note that the patterns on the left and right of each tile size are the same with the left shown as a horizontal running bond and the right, vertical.

And a laNeva insider- update for people who read to the end of each post:

Within the coming week, you'll see a few changes to the laNeva site, with our new collections (including this one) added to the "Our Tiles" tab.  Have questions? Check out the FAQ's or contact us for more details.  We love to hear from laNeva Tile fans!

The Alternative Tile Layout- Vertical

We've linked to Houzz Ideabooks in the past but today we want to share a collection of photos that illustrate our favorite point: You CAN and SHOULD use rectangular tiles vertically!  Here is a beautiful visual collection of vertical tile installations. Choose any of laNeva's mesh-mounted SPAN field tile patterns, released last week, to achieve the same fresh, dramatic look. Click the dots or arrows below to scroll through the Houzz Ideabook.  Enjoy!

Interiors by Anouk B

Have you heard of Anouk B out of the Netherlands? Anouk is an interior stylist and seems to be published everywhere lately. Her gorgeously simplistic environments are an inspiration in black and white.  See Anouk B in Remodelista, Vosges Paris and Emmas Designblog featuring photographer Marjon Hoogervorst.

Even with the simple color palette and clean, modern lines of these spaces, the rooms are not austere.  Warmth and texture is added with just slight details of color and natural materials. We adore this look (plus the fact that she's from our mother’s homeland, the Netherlands) and see this style as a more refined sibling of the sometimes a-little-too-country-rustic but equally modern, Scandinavian design.

Of course as a tile designer (and interior designer) I see one missing detail: Art tile. I can't help it, it is like a blaring hole when I look at these photos.  One minute- just let me paint you a picture:

Imagine a backsplash or shower detail of laNeva's 1"x1" straight stack tiles in color #31 Snow.  The rhythm and texture is punctuated with a Slice Collection stripe of Christopher’s Signature colorway Rift in #24 Steel / #77 Dune (or if that's too much black, how about Snow/Dune - equally stunning).  Aaaahhhh, the perfect compliment!

Environmental Statement

Green?  Eco?  Environmentally Friendly? There is much information in the news about "Green" products.  We hate the word "Green" (since there is no tangible way to measure a "green" product) and prefer not to define ourselves by that term.

What's important  to us is the overall environmental impact of a product, evaluated by the life cycle costs involved in a products' production, maintenance and ultimately, its disposal.

laNeva Artisan Tile was founded on the idea that tile glazes should NEVER contain lead. Since we've been manufacturing tile, we've developed other ways to minimize our environmental impact through creative reuse of waste and reduction of extraneous materials. Everyday we do what we can and continually evaluate and improve our processes. We care about the world and want to see it stick around for our children, grandchildren and beyond.

Read laNeva's environmental statement here or click on the "Environment" tab above.

Herringbone Classico Goes Retro

Since we've been on the subject of herringbone patterns lately with our release of Herringbone Classico and a week later, our inspired Herringbone Zig Zag, we have just one more for you:

Herringbone Classico goes retro with a 3-color random mix of #77 Café, #73 Butter and #92 Mist Crackle. The herringbone layout is paired here with a 1/2" x 6" border of #75 Curry and a 3"x3" field tile in #73 Butter, placed in a vertical running bond pattern.

We were inspired to show this fun interpretation of Herringbone Classico today thanks to Spacial Adaptation posting a wonderfully kitchy retro photo from Grassrootsmodern.com:

If you want to kick up the contrast of this pattern a little, consider replacing the subtle Mist Crackle with the darker (and matte) #95 Lichen.

See this pattern and several other of our conceptual layouts on our Design Ideas page, all featuring our spectacular handmade, made to order ceramic wall tile.

Zig Zag- A New Herringbone Pattern

You never know when inspiration will strike. Today, while checking our Twitter account, I saw an intriguing tweet from HAUS Interior:

http://twitter.com/#!/HausInterior

I clicked the link and found an extraordinary Zig Zag throw, in graphic Navy and White.

We loved it instantly- for its simple yet timeless pattern, its bold lines and striking contrast of color.

Just as instantly, my mind flashed to our Lineal Collection border pattern, Herringbone Classico.  Here we have a simple herringbone pattern, which is really just a zig zag layout... and our border could easily be specified as an alternating zig zag instead of how we've shown it previously, as two colors of tile randomly placed.

Since we produce each tile and assemble each order by hand, we can make it the way you like. If you prefer dynamic movement in your patterns, this is perfect in both classic colors or as a blast of brights for a mod interior. Any of our handmade Solid Colors can be combined to create a unique border design. Do you want delicate or wide stripes? Yes, you can choose that, too.

Here are four zig zag options that are available using our Herringbone Classico pattern.  Choose 2, 3 or 4 colors for this stunning new pattern option - Herringbone Zig Zag.

For a retro look,  we recommend solid colors #95 Lichen, #73 Butter and #24 Steel.

For a more classic zig zag, try #68 Twilight, #31 Snow and #71 Dune.

Check out our other newly released Lineal Collection patterns on our blog: Woven Rift, Rift Valley, Bamboo Forest, Composition Six and Marching Orders.  How will you customize the patterns to make your own unique design?

The Slice Collection Release

We've had a great week with a new Lineal Collection border launch each day.  Now, for the final tie-in, a component piece. The Slice Collection is for those who may just want a splash of gorgeous handmade tile, or those who want to add another detail to their laNeva Lineal Border or solid color handmade field tile. The Slice Collection is a ribbon of mesh-mounted tile, using 2x2 or 3x3 square Rift tiles, or those sizes along with their coordinating rectangle sizes.

We introduce the Slice Collection and a few of its variations:

(All drawings and photos above show 2 lineal feet of Slice design each.)

With any of these layouts, you choose to have horizontal (A) or vertical (B) Rift tiles (with Rift color divisions shown as dotted lines in the drawings above).

Slice using only square tiles is available using 2"x 2" or 3"x 3" tiles.

Slice using square and rectangular tiles is available in combinations of 3x3/3x6 OR 2x2/2x4 and is a smaller version of our Rift Valley Lineal border pattern released this past week.

Of course, the Slice Collection components are available using any standard combination of our handmade Rift Series tiles.

If you are looking for a simple border, use any of colors with any layout variation as a listello insert within a larger tile wall design.  If you just want a touch of tile, use these alone, with an overglazed (finished) top edge for a  ribbon of tile at a backsplash.  Want to create a large, dramatic design? Use a Slice accent as a secondary detail along with our Rift Valley Lineal border.  The possibilities are endless!

Lineal Border Collection Finale: Day 6

This is the final day of our week-long Lineal Collection border launch, and we are so excited to show you this incredible border design!

The second of two Lineal Collection borders using our Rift Series tiles, this utilizes laNeva's unique 2-color tile in a whole new and previously unavailable way-- BIG! This is our very first time offering 4"x4" laNeva Rift Series tiles, and oh, they are gorgeous!

Each Rift tile is handmade, hand glazed and completely unique.  There is a natural chemical reaction that occurs at the overlap line of the two glaze colors and depending on the glazes used, this reaction may create bubbles, a muted color blending or a third color entirely.  To learn more about our Rift tiles and the name, check out our blog post on the Rift.

Are you ready for our final Lineal Collection design?  We present to you, Rift Valley.

(If you want an up close and personal view, click on any image)

A more delicate border overall but with big impact, this one measures approximately 6" H. It's softly undulating, organic Rift pattern creates a division point reminiscent of the horizon.

Rift Valley is shown here using the following laNeva Solid Colors:

  • 1"x 6"  & 1/2"x 6"  liner bars at top and bottom: #68 Twilight
  • 1"x2" random insert at bottom: #68 Twilight
  • 4"x4"  & 2"x 4" Rift Tiles: #95 Lichen/ #68 Twilight

Finished with a sand colored grout.

This border measures approximately 6" tall, 3/8" thick and is sold mesh mounted in 12" lengths.  The Rift tiles and bottom border pieces are randomly placed with no true repeat.

One method to create a completely different look with Rift Valley is to use #95 Lichen as the border accent in place of Twilight, or switch the colorway entirely to a different Rift Tile, but we don't know why you'd do that since this is so fabulous and full of character!  Our other beautiful Rift Tile colors are as follows:

Here's the rundown of this past week and the new Lineal Collection borders:

And finally, if you want the lowdown on our Lineal Collection, here's how it works:

laNeva Tile's "Lineal" border collection is a series of 6 pre-designed, mesh-mounted borders of our most popular patterns. Since you choose the colors and combinations, your border can be as contemporary or traditional as you'd like. We provide detailed drawings and you personalize the design with our choice of any of our solid color glazes(or Rift glazes for Woven Rift and Rift Valley).

Thanks for joining us on this week-long product launch adventure!  We have ONE more big announcement for Monday that ties in directly to today's post. Stick around for one more exciting Rift product perfect for those who may just want a splash of handmade tile. See you Monday!

Lineal Border Launch: Day 5

For Day 5 and 6 of our Lineal Collection border launch, we are switching gears and focusing on Lineal designs that use our Rift Series (2-color) tiles.

laNeva offers six standard Rift Series color combinations and we are proud to showcase these fun, unexpected tiles. Each Rift tile is completely unique, with a natural chemical reaction occurring at the overlap line of the two glazes.  The glaze combinations may create bubbles, a muted color blending or a third color entirely.  To learn more about our Rift tiles and the name, check out our blog post on the Rift.

So without further ado, we present our next Lineal Collection border pattern, Woven Rift.

(If you want an up close and personal view, click on any image)

Another big border, this one is stunning in its character and simplicity. Reminiscent of a herringbone, the pattern takes laNeva's 2-color Rift tiles and randomly alternates them to create a woven-look.

Woven Rift is shown here using the following laNeva Solid Colors:

  • 1"x 6" liner bars at top and bottom: #71 Dune
  • 2"x 2" Rift Tiles: #61 Sky/#90 Oregano

Finished with a sand colored grout.

This border measures approximately 10-1/2" tall, 3/8" thick and is sold mesh mounted in 12" lengths.  The Rift tiles alternate, but there is no true repeat.

One method to create a completely different look with Woven Rift is to insert a random accent Rift tile.  Christopher's Baths & Kitchens in Englewood, Colorado displays a laNeva Woven Rift board where we have inserted a few #71 Dune/#84 Scarlet Rift tiles into an overall pattern of Christopher's exclusive Rift colorway #71 Dune/#24 Steel.  The design is capped with a #31 Snow liner bar and completed with 3x6 tile in #71 Dune.  (Please note that the Christopher's border is a half-tile-height shorter than the Lineal Collection design shown above).

If you prefer more sophisticated, reserved tile borders, check out day 1 and 2 releases Bamboo Forest and Herringbone Classico. Are you modern and like bold colors with lots of contrast? Then Marching Orders and Composition Six are for you.

We provide the detailed drawings and the color examples and you personalize the design with our choice of any of our solid color glazes. It's still a custom design made just for you, but with no pricing surprises and a faster lead time.

Tomorrow is our finale - one final, beautiful Lineal Collection border that ties into another Rift Series product announcement. The suspense is too much!! See you tomorrow!

Lineal Border Launch: Day 4

Are we having fun yet or what?

After two days of transitional patterns with subtle color, yesterday we introduced you to the super-bold design of Marching Orders.  Keeping with the theme of modern, bold designs, we have one more.  This pattern has been a huge success already with our Mondrian blog post and rendering from  last February.  Introducing laNeva's  next Lineal Collection border, which we shall simply call Composition Six.

(If you want an up close and personal view, click on any image)

This is another bold and graphic pattern for laNeva Tile, utilizing the primary colors so common in DeStijl artwork.  DeStijl in Dutch means "The Style" and is the name of the artistic movement that was headed by the famous Piet Mondrian in the early 20th century. This design is as much about the blocks of color as it is about the patterns that are created by the grout lines.

Composition Six is shown here using the following laNeva Solid Colors:

  • 1"x 6" liner bars and 1"x 2" Background Color: #31 Snow
  • 1"x 2" & 2"x 2" Accent Colors: #68 Twilight, #84 Siren, #73 Butter, #24 Steel
  • 4"x 4" Accent Colors: #84 Siren, #73 Butter

Finished with a dark gray colored grout.

This border measures approximately 10-1/2" tall, 3/8" thick and is sold mesh mounted in 12" lengths or in a 12"W x 10-1/2"H panel with overglazed (finished) edges.  There is a semi-random repeat using the DeStijl layout concept and these size components shown.

One method to create a completely different look with Composition Six is to use lighter grout for the installation. Alternately, the pattern could be constructed in a more subdued color scheme using  #95 Lichen, #68 Twilight and#92 Mist Crackle, or you can choose any of laNeva's Solid Color tiles for a personalized creation.

Want to see the first 3 designs in the Lineal Series? Mondays post featured the release of Bamboo Forest. Tuesday we launched Herringbone Classico and Wednesday was the uber-bold, Marching Orders.

And finally, if you want the general skinny on our Lineal Collection, here's how it works:

laNeva Tile's "Lineal" border collection is a series of 6 pre-designed, mesh-mounted borders of our most popular patterns. Since you choose the colors and combinations, your border can be as contemporary or traditional as you'd like.

We provide the detailed drawings and the color examples and you personalize the design with our choice of any of our solid color glazes. It's still a custom design made just for you, but with no pricing surprises and a faster lead time. What's not to like with that?

Our final two Lineal Collection borders will be featured Friday and Saturday, using our luscious Rift Series tiles.  These will tie into a special product announcement on Monday. Oh, we can't wait!
