Top 4 Reasons laNeva Tile is NOT For You

Although we'd love for everyone to have laNeva Artisan Tile gracing their bathroom, kitchen backsplash, fireplace or reception area, we know that our handcrafted tile is not for everyone.

How do you know if laNeva tile is NOT for you? The following questions might help you decide:

1.) You want tile that is uniform in color, texture and size.

Our tile collections are made by hand, and have the subtle variation in size, color and texture that is inherent in all handmade product. If you prefer smooth, flat and completely uniform tile, we refer you to any of the beautiful machine-made tile that is being produced and is available at tile showrooms and home improvement stores across the country.

If you prefer the warmth and energy that only handmade products can bring, plus the satisfaction that you are supporting local artists and small businesses, then maybe laNeva Tile is the right fit for you.

2.) You need tile today (or rather, yesterday) and can't wait for it.

Each laNeva Tile collection (GLASS, Cast Bronze and Beetlekill Pine) is made by hand, per order and is not pre-made or stocked. It takes time to produce and finish each piece by hand, and while many times it can be shipped earlier, our standard lead times range from 4-6 weeks for Beetlekill Pine and to 10-12 weeks for GLASS and Cast Bronze.

We're happy to help you plan your tile design for not additional charge. Whether it is all laNeva Tile or a combination tile manufacturers, we'll make sure every detail is considered, you approve of the final design and and there are no surprises upon installation. This is just one of the value-added services we offer to make sure you are completely satisfied and your handmade tile will be well worth the wait.

3.) You need a field-tile for floor use.

Our three laNeva tile collections are approved for all interior wall uses. That being said, there are some specific floor applications where laNeva COULD be used.

laNeva GLASS and Beetlekill tile can be used as an accent on a low-traffic floor such as a residential bathroom or powder room. Both have the possibility of scratching and are not warrantied, but it can be done.

Upon special request, we can also design custom pieces in our Cast Bronze collection to be used on any floor location, but our two current high-relief designs cannot be approved for floor use. Please contact us with specific questions regarding your installation. We're happy to draw a collection of tile designs to fit the unique requirements of your project.

4.) You need to meet a $10/SF (or less) budget.

laNeva Tile is a luxury, high-end tile and while we work with many different budgets, there are times when not even a decorative border or dot accent tile can fit the bill (literally). We understand that our handmade tile is not for everyone at every time, so we hope you come back to us next time you are in the market for handmade tile, or please refer a designer, architect or friend who may be interested in a unique look that is unlike anything you will find at a big-box store.

Thanks for your continued interest in laNeva Artisan Tile.  Please contact us with any questions, to order a sample, or to discuss whether laNeva Tile is the right fit for your project.

[laNeva NEWS] Announcing The Cast Bronze Collection

Announcing laNeva Cast Bronze Tile!

laNeva Cast Bronze Collection

Available in 2 patterns, in 3 glaze options, these substantial, high-relief tiles are designed by Lisa La Nasa at laNeva Tile and exclusively handmade and finished by artists at Hixwerx in St. Paul, MN.

Creating cast bronze is a very time-consuming and labor intensive process.

Clay ModelsJune2014-1of3

A clay sculpture needs to be made of the desired design (pictured above), then using this sculpture, a closed sand mold is created and the clay sculpture removed (below).

Molten bronze is poured into the sand mold, filling all the space left by the clay. After the mold is cooled, it can be opened and the excess bronze material such as the pour spout and overfill cut off (tiles just out of the mold pictured below).

Think you can't mix materials in an installation? Think again. SK8 tile with laNeva's own handmade L-shaped tile (or our handmade squares/rectangles) create dynamic, textural tile patterns that are as bold as you want them to be. Available in several standard mesh-mounted patterns or we can design one for you. Cut from reclaimed skateboard decks in Pennsylvania.

laNeva Diagonal Rift on Modico Tile

Our moderately priced, molded tile body that can be custom glazed in all the solids and Rift combinations of our original handmade tile. Modico is contemporary, uniform and a perfect option for commercial applications and those projects where shipping costs can add up. Thinner is lighter. Bonus! Shown is diagonal Rift with no grout spacing. Custom glazed in Colorado.

laNeva 1x2 Beetlekill Pine Tile

Beetlekill Pine.

Reclaimed waste-wood that is killed naturally and available in abundance. Expertly laminated, cut, and finished to highlight the intrinsic beauty that can only come from nature. This is incredible tile. Colorado trees, produced into tile just for laNeva in Colorado.

And the really incredible thing is that these can all be customized. Most can be combined and we can create the perfect tile design for you. Contact us with your project details or call 612-217-1748 for more information.

Treetop Oasis in Minneapolis

Older homes are the best, arent't they? Maybe we should clarify: in terms of unique details and amazing woodwork, they can't be rivaled. In terms of pre-existing conditions, surprises and cost to remodel.... well, unfortunately they can't be rivaled there either.

Lisa La Nasa, laNeva Tile's fearless leader had the opportunity to work on a beauty of a 1907 4-Square home in Minneapolis' Kenwood neighborhood not once but twice. In 2006-07 she designed the remodel for the lower level laundry room and 3/4 bath. In 2011 she was called back to design a master suite in the semi-finished-then-gutted attic space. The owners wanted spa-like spaces tucked under the eaves while keeping the original windows and adding a rooftop deck to gaze among the treetops. Oh, wouldn't those leafy treetops be grand this time of year!

The bedroom and closet are incredible, the refurbished windows are enchanting but the bathroom is divine. laNeva's 4"x8" Modico Tile in a straight stack was used for the majority of the shower and the bathroom baseboard. The sink splash is Modico 2"x8' straight stack. The crisp white glaze of laNeva's ceramic pops against natural gray grout and an array of turquoise-gray mesh-mounted pebbles, which were inexpensively sourced from a local big-box store.

The contractors, Metamorphosis Design-Build, did an excellent job with the preexisting conditions- a mess of hand-built trusses, major electrical challenges and a previously installed geo-thermal system to name a few- and also designed and constructed the exterior deck.  You can see more of the 'after' pics when you visit the Metamorphosis site. Scroll down on their site to see all of the photos.

Our resources included an array of Minnesota-based small businesses. Here are a few:

  • Wood From The Hood provided Minneapolis Elm for the hardwood floors and bathroom countertop.
  • Andy's Woodworking custom built the bathroom and bedroom cabinetry.
  • Storganize designed and built the closet storage, including their attic hanging systems which are suspended from the sloped ceilings.
  • MN Window Restoration removed and repaired/rebuilt 7 original windows.
Of course, any remodel is a team effort. We are thankful for the fabulous homeowners, dedicated Design-Build team at Metamorphosis and all the hard working subcontractors and suppliers. We are proud to not only be a part, but to have had the opportunity to see our second project for this family from the very beginning to the end result - and for laNeva's Modico 4"x8" field tile to find a beautiful 'new' home.

[laNeva News] Announcing Beetlekill Pine Tile

In our quest to provide the coolest, most unique artisan-made tile in the USA, we approached Ryan Schlaefer of Ryan Schlaefer Fine Furniture in Loveland, Colorado to partner with laNeva to produce tile using an uncommon material: waste wood killed by the Northern Pine Beetle. Before we get into the details of the wood, we have to tell you about Ryan: A graduate of the Art Institute of Colorado, Ryan’s contemporary furniture pieces have a sense of scale and artful mix of materials that can only come from an artist’s eye. Not just a furniture maker, Ryan uses the beauty of form to create one-of-a-kind (as well as ready-to-ship) pieces using beetlekill pine and an array of other woods.

Now back to the tile.

Beetlekill 1"x 2"
Beetlekill 1"x 2"

Wood tile? Wood killed by beetles? Yes and Yes.

Beetlekill wood is a waste product in many western states in the USA. Instead of letting the wood go to the chipper or providing unwanted fuel to forest fires, it is gaining a unique following and being cut and milled for everything from furniture to building materials.  Artists like Ryan Schalefer have developed a love for the look and story behind this unusual wood and incorporated this waste-wood into gorgeous contemporary furniture and fixtures- and now decorative wall tile.

laNeva 1x4 Beetlekill tile
laNeva 1x4 Beetlekill tile

The extraordinary detail about beetlekill pine is the streaking left by the beetles. The beetles leave an enzyme in the wood that turns the graining blue, gray, purple, or even rust colored. Each piece is an incredible act of nature, completely unique and available only through laNeva Artisan Tile.

For accent walls (non-wet locations), our Beetlekill pine tile can be applied with an epoxy straight to the substrate with butt-joints. No need for grout. Our pine tile is composed of 1/4″ beetle-kill pine with a backer of 1/4″ plywood, attached using a high-pressure lamination process. Before leaving the artists hands, the pine is sanded and edges smoothed, then a clear polyurethane is applied. We are currently offering 1″ x 2″ , 1″x 4″, 2″x 2″ and 2″x 4″ sizes. Additional sizes and finished edging pieces can be produced by request.

laNeva Beetlekill Sizes

laNeva Beetlekill Sizes

Our beetlekill tile has a very low expansion and contraction rate due to the plywood backer and as a result, it can be used in conjunction with tile from any of our other collections and either butt-jointed without grout or grouted (using a flexible grout) to create a dynamic multi-media tile installation. If using in a damp location such as a backsplash, we recommend using a grouted installation with a sealer applied after install to both the grout and wood tile.

laNeva's BEETLEKILL PINE TILE IS made from reclaimed waste wood in Colorado. This is beautiful, unique, functional tile with quite a story!

laNeva’s Newest: Modico Molded Tile

Announcing laNeva’s newest tile collection: Modico Molded Tile. You choose between our gorgeous glaze colors (or two glazes for a Rift Series Blend, in straight or diagonal designs, as shown below) and your selection will be hand-glazed per order to create your unique design.

laNeva Diagonal Rift on Modico Tile

Why choose a molded tile? Molded tile allows for larger sizes, more shape options, a thinner tile and quick ship time. All of this with a sleek, uniform look that can be installed with narrow grout lines.

You want 400 sf of hex tile, plus cove base, bullnose and inside/outside corners? We can do that!

Modico Collection Sizes available: 2x2, 2x4, 2x8, 3x3, 3x6 4x6, 4x8, 6x8, 8x8, 12x12, 2” hex and 4-3/8” hex. Additional sizes and trim pieces are available such as bullnose, sanitary cove, liners, chair rail, v-cap, inside and outside corners, etc.

[laNeva News] Product Launch: laNeva SK8 Patterns

In our last post, we detailed how laNeva Tile is partnering with like-minded companies and artisans to create tile designs and patterns that are greater than the sum of their parts. Dynamic, interesting, never seen before combinations that we think are pretty spectacular (can you tell?!?!) This collaboration concept was born this past summer and was first evident with the laNeva GLASS tile launch in October. After working to refine and precisely plan our multi-media tile collaboration, we are launching today:

laNeva Tile & SK8 Tile by Art of Board

AOB logo
AOB logo

Art of Board is an incredible company that not only uses recycled skateboard decks to create graphic, functional wall tile, they also coordinate nationwide collection of used skateboard decks through their organization I Ride I Recycle and support several local and national charities.

SK8 tiles are hand cut from 100% recycled skate decks. Every scratch, scrape and gouge is kept intact – making them truly original. Each tile has its own story. They’re alive with texture, shape and color. Together, they bring that story to life in every space they inhabit – creating a vibrant visual experience in the home, retail or commercial environment.

Without further delay, here are just the starting two of our SK8 designs, featuring laNeva's new L-shaped handmade ceramic tile and Art of Board recycled skateboard tiles:

Tile, from an Interior Designer's Perspective

laNeva AOB board 1As an Interior Designer, I look at tile and designing with tile a little differently than a tilemaker might. I see that one tile collection is usually is not vast enough to meet varying client needs.

I am used to searching through my design studio's samples, online and through numerous local showrooms, only to find out that the components I want to use together for a project are not available in coordinating sizes. Alternatively, if you choose tile from the same manufacturer, the look can be stale, expected.

Not anymore.

We are taking our original, the laNeva 3/8" thick handmade tile body, and building a series of coordinating collections, with materials and sizes that can be used together or individually to create some pretty wild (or reserved) combinations.

Ceramic. Glass. Wood (yea, we said wood). All made in the USA by independent artisans.

A big laNeva product launch is coming later this month, with another in each of the first 3 months of 2012. We can't wait to share this new direction with you. This is just the start.....

End Of 2011- Recap & A Plan

The standard "What A Year It Has Been!" that we'll all see on the coming holiday letters really is true this year for us. It's been wild! laNeva Tile has expanded production dramatically from 2010 and we have so many more options for patterns, customization and alternative materials. We've partnered with Zelle Glass to create a completely dramatic, luxury glass tile collection (laNeva GLASS which launched this past October). We are working with so many incredible designers and showrooms  that astound us with their talent and creativity.

laNeva has also moved to dealer sales only, which helps to streamline our production and customer service as well as dramatically increases our dealer network. Yippee!

And, it's not like we're just going to coast into 2012. We're not done yet!

The GLASS launch this past October was the start of 3 new product launches. The second and third of which are in production now and will be rolled out in early 2012.  These are collaborative products as well as a whole new direction for the future of laNeva tile. We're so excited, but really can't say any more.

What we CAN show you now is a component of one of these new products. A peek. A tease. Just one part of the puzzle that we will be revealing soon:

There will be some other changes and additions coming about: More colors in GLASS and ceramic for 2012, including 3 new 'IT' glaze colors to be chosen by YOU (and lets do that a little earlier in 2012, shall we? )

Along with the color additions, others are getting the ax and there will be a few deletions from our lines. We will never be one of those companies with 100 or even 50 colors per product line.

Streamlined. Refined. Yes.

But hey, I'm jumping ahead a month. There's a lot of celebrating to be done before the end of the year, and celebrating we shall do. We're just excited to keep moving forward!

LEED Certification?

In a recent conversation  with a laNeva Dealer, we discussed all different aspects of our production, environmental practices, future designs and how we might fit for a future project they were presenting. ' In the middle of that call, I was also asked if the tile that laNeva produces is LEED certified.

After the discussion, I got off the phone and did some research. I hadn't thought  that LEED certifies products, but couldn't be sure. Manufacturers can have all sorts of 'environmental' certifications from various organizations, many of which cost buco-bucks and are akin to Organic Certification for a local CSA. The CSA might follow all the same organic practices, but it doesn't make economical sense for a small operation to pay for such an expensive certification.... but I digress.

As stated direct from the website:

Q: Can I get my product or service LEED certified?

A: USGBC does not certify, endorse or promote products, services or companies, nor do we track, list or report data related to products and their environmental qualities.

LEED is a certification system that deals with the environmental performance of buildings based on overall characteristics of the project. We do not award credits based on the use of particular products but rather upon meeting the performance standards set forth in our rating systems. It is up to project teams to determine which products are most appropriate for credit achievement and program requirements.

So, in an itty-bitty nutshell, that answer is no. laNeva Tile is not a LEED Certified product, nor is any other tile or any other building product.  It is the entire construction project that could qualify for LEED Certification, to which the materials are only a small component.

To learn the basics of LEED, particularly LEED For Homes, watch this great overview video:

LEED for Homes: Certification Process from U.S. Green Building Council on Vimeo.

If you're interested in learning more about laNeva's environmental practices, see the Environmental Statement on our site, email or just call us.

While not all of our products are high on the recycled-content spectrum, we have others that are 100% recycled content.  Plus, we're adding new products and refining our techniques all the time.

Your home/office/restaurant might just be nearby a production site for a specific laNeva Tile collection! And,  a huge advantage to using tile is the long-term durability, simple maintenance and overall low life-cycle cost.

Zelle Glass Studio for laNeva Artisan Tile

Zelle Glass has an incredible history creating commissioned glass sculpture, countertops and gallery pieces.

Peter Zelle is a master of the glassmaking process and the head of a studio with whom we are very proud to partner. We've attempted to illustrate the laborious process of making the laNeva GLASS Collection here.  While intriguing, it does not truly convey the time and attention that goes into making every tile.

Read on to learn how each laNeva GLASS tile is produced:

  • The first step is to create a silicon mold in the size of the desired tile.  A mixture of plaster and silica powder is mixed with water until it is a slurry, like pancake mix, and then poured into the silicon mold.
  • When the plaster/silica hardens, the mold is pulled off. Now there is a 4”x4” space where the glass tile forms.
  • Colored glass frit, like coarse sugar, are sprinkled into the plaster/silica mold. This 1/8” layer of color is then covered with chunks of clear glass. These chunks are irregular shapes which create beautiful shadowy lines in the tiles where the chunk edges melt together.
  • Once all the glass is put into molds, they are loaded into the kiln.
  • The tiles are heated slowly over 12 hours to 1250° F and held there for 3 more hours. This allows all the bubbles to reach the surface. Next the kiln is raised to 1550° F and the glass pools and flows like honey.
  • Glass needs to be annealed, or cooled slowly. This relieves any stress in the glass so no cracking will occur. This process takes 12 more hours.
  • Once the tiles are cooled they are removed from the plaster/silica mold. The plaster/silica just breaks apart and is discarded.
  • The second half of the glass tile making process involves grinding the edges of the tiles and then fire polishing them in the kiln.
  • The grinding is done on a water fed flattening wheel with a 200 grit diamond pad. This is a semi coarse grit which will smooth out any imperfections from the mold. Then the tiles are placed back in the kiln at room temperature and heated over 1 hour to 1000° F.
  • Now the fire polishing takes place. The kiln temp is then raised to 1450° F. At that point the edges of the tiles start to round just a bit and the coarse ground areas gloss over and become smooth and shiny.
  • The kiln is then quickly cooled by opening the door a bit until it is back down to 1000° F. The pieces are annealed again over 12 hours.
  • Finally they are removed from the kiln and the back sides are hand painted white to give the brilliant colors a background to glow against.

To learn more about laNeva GLASS options, colors and specs, see the collection on our website and blog launch post.

laNeva Exclusively Through Dealers

As our business and dealer networks expand, we are revising our sales and distribution policies to sell our tile exclusively through tile dealers.

This helps to support our fabulous network of people who work so hard to display and sell our products.

Please contact us to see if there is currently a laNeva dealer in your area.  If there is not, please tell your local tile showroom that you would like to purchase from us. We'll process their new dealer account quickly and you can place your order through your local resource, with whom you have a relationship.

We're happy to send you tile samples and specifier chip boxes (available for online order shortly) and will then refer you to your local tile dealer for orders.

Thank you for all your support in making laNeva Artisan Tile a growing, thriving tile boutique!

All my best,

ZigZag Buzz & laNeva Diagonals

Independent of all this Missoni for Target insanity, we've been working on something. Something that planted roots in our mind over 3 years ago. Something we tested but never pursued.  We are here to show you what we got! The laNeva Diagonal Rift:

This is our Rift Series Tile design reinterpreted on a rectangular tile body.  Available in 2"x4" and 3"x6". Sold by the piece or mesh mounted in any design you dream up.

What knocks our socks off are the stunning zig zag, diamond and chevron patterns you can make with these little bad boys:

Zig-zags and chevron patterns have never been so hot (and we all know who to thank for that.  Missoni, of course!) Want to check out more of ours? Take a look at our Herringbone ZigZag, the decidedly more relaxed Herringbone Classico or oh-so chic, Herringbone Retro.

Of course, any laNeva pattern can be made with any laNeva Color. That's the beauty when tile is handmade, just for you.

Oh, and thanks to our hometown brand of Target (and Missoni) for this crazy zig-zag buzz...

Gorgeous New Rift Combinations

Our Rift Tiles are an exciting way to add texture and dimension to your tile design.

We layer and layer and layer two colors of glaze, side-by-side, on one tile.  Sometimes this creates a chemical reaction between the two glazes during firing, resulting in dynamic bubbles. Other times, the result is more subtle and appears like an ocean wave,  a semi-transparent  color overlay, or even created a third color entirely.

We love every one of our Rift combinations and find great fun in exploring these glaze combinations to create some really unique tiles.

While assembling our latest designer sample boxes of 2"x 2" tile , we've decided to add a few of these surprise Rift tiles to each one.  You never know what you'll get and you may just be the first to see a brand new laNeva colorway!

Please email if you're interested in a sample box of our 2" x 2" tile.  These include all of our solid colors and a sampling of Rift color combinations.  If you are interested in a specific colorway, please contact us for more information and availability.

We want your input. Love these? Hate these? Have ideas for a Rift colorways that we haven't shown yet?

Leave a comment here or on the laNeva Facebook page with your input or suggestions!

The Future of laNeva Tile

You will see a shift in laNeva Artisan Tile

In the coming weeks, we're rolling out some changes 'round here. Starting with an updated logo and website, we are working on a cleaner  look with added site functionality and an indepth behind-the-curtain view of laNeva Tile.  We'll talk about (and show you) our process, how we make & design our gorgeous handmade tile and you'll also see the launch of our online shop.

Secondly, we're so completely excited, we're nearly jumping from our seats! There are two fresh, new product lines we're pairing with laNeva ceramics, with the official launch dates over the next two months.  These tile materials have been meticulously designed by us and are available only through laNeva, our reps and showrooms.

laNeva GLASS Tile Launch

Mid September will be the debut of our new laNeva GLASS tile, designed by laNeva to coordinate with our ceramics and made by the incredible glass artist Peter Zelle in Minneapolis.  Ours is a very textural, layered and fused glass tile, available in 8 color combinations and made to order.  These tiles have a dynamic juxtaposition of color and incredible depth that cannot be matched by anything else we've seen. These are not mosaics, we are going BOLD.  Our sizes for laNeva GLASS are 4"x4", 4"x 8", 4"x 12" and 8"x8" (with a possible 12"x 12" as well).

Mid October Will Launch Another Product Pairing

While the details are still being finalized, we're working with another great company to create laNeva fusion tile patterns. These are funky, unexpected material groupings,  textures and a playful approach to traditional mesh-mounted borders and field tile layouts.

A New laNeva Ceramic SHAPE

We also have a new laNeva ceramic tile shape to release in October, perfectly engineered to work with these new materials and patterns. Is anyone else doing this? We certainly don't think so.

Our goal is to provide a completely unique offering of tile products handmade in the USA. We're pairing ceramic, glass and other materials in fresh, funky, exciting ways, all made for and designed by laNeva Tile. We're luxury, but not elitist tile! As a professional interior designer, I know that the most dynamic tile designs are often a mix from several sources. We're bringing those sources and options here, to laNeva Artisan Tile!

Budget Border Install

It's always fun to see laNeva Tile living in its new home, with its new family. We recently worked with a homeowner to design a small, rectalinear border (mesh-mounted and interlocking, with a random pattern layout) for a budget bathroom remodel. Measuring a mere 5" high, this border contains 1x1's in Lichen, 1x2 in Dune and 1/2 x 6 liners in Café.

Don't let the small size fool you, this border really stands out. Paired with inexpensive white 3x6 subway tile, the border is all the accent needed to create interest and texture in an otherwise neutral bathroom.

Like this project, handmade tile can fit into nearly any budget. The homeowners kept the existing cabinetry and plumbing layout but replaced much of the sheetrock, insulation, tile throughout, countertop (with integral sink) faucets, mirror lighting and paint.

And the budget breakdown, you ask? Lets take a look:

(All figures are approximate)

1. Countertop w/ integral sink       $500.00
2.  Subway  tile                                      $ 350.00
3.  laNeva Tile Border                         $800.00
3.  Plumbing fixtures                          $550.00
(toilet, sink faucet, shower faucets)
4.  Floor tile                                            $100.00
5.  Sheet rock/cement board/joint   $400.00
compound/paint/ tape/sealer
6.  Plumbing supplies                          $200.00
7.  Rugs,towels,pictures, etc            $150.00
8.  Miscellaneous                                   $100.00
9.  Labor                                             $ 500.00

The homeowners did much of the labor themselves, but called in the pros for a few technical items. What a great job, and with spending only $4000 total.

laNeva Artisan Tile is a fabulous pairing with natural stone and machine made tile.  We'll even help you with the design layout, and provide installation drawings. What's not to love? We make it easy to add some color to your life!

[Houzz Ideabook] Accent Tile Design Ideas

Contemporary bathroom

Handmade Tile:

It can be expensive - that's the bad news. Good news is that there are so many ways to use handmade tile as an accent alongside less expensive, machine-made field tile or stone. This is a great way for handmade tile to fit into nearly every budget.

For example, take a look at this gorgeous tile combo pictured to the right by San Francisco interior designerNiche Interiors.  The red handmade ceramic border, installed low on the wall and paired with natural stone & brass details is warm, fun and completely unexpected!

Below is a Houzz Ideabook showing even more examples how  to add color & interest with accent tile.
